MY STORY
Landscape photographer, educator, and founder of Led by Light.
Greetings,
Thank you for visiting, and welcome to my little corner of the internet. Call me Nick. I have been a photographer for a little over twenty years, and I have loved every step of the journey. As a man of God, husband, and father, life is busy most days. But I always find time for photography, whether that is in my backyard or hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles away from home.
My passion for the outdoors started young, and I owe a lot of that to my late father. He encouraged me to join the Boy Scouts when I was seven. It was a great introduction to the wilderness and to a life outdoors. His participation in the program helped me tremendously.
As the years passed, filled with hiking and camping, an outdoorsman took shape. My adventures began in the heart of Wisconsin at a family cabin on Castle Rock Lake. From early spring through late fall, my family and I spent every weekend there. I made some of my fondest childhood memories at that cabin.
Every trip felt like an adventure, whether we were out on the lake or hiking new trails. In time, I began exploring farther into the Northwoods of Wisconsin, and eventually found myself on the shoreline of Lake Superior.
Inspired by my father’s stories of growing up in Thunder Bay, my adventures grew bolder as I discovered many of the places he had hiked before me. Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains. Minnesota’s North Shore. The shorelines of Ontario. My curiosity led the way, and discovery kept fueling the passion.
In those early days, I hiked with a simple instant camera. Nothing special, just enough to share the adventure. But as my understanding of photography grew, so did my desire to create stronger photographs. In time, my father gifted me his Minolta Maxxum 400Si film camera and a few lenses to get me started.
That was when things changed for me. The experience became the driving force behind my work, and I started paying closer attention to the moments that stopped me in my tracks. Through the camera, I was exploring my connection to nature in a deeper way that has stayed with me ever since.
For me, it has always been about the adventure. Traveling somewhere far from where most people would go, simply to enjoy the journey. Being present as the rising sun paints the landscape. Camping deep in the wilderness near age-old waterfalls. The feeling of that first breath of cold air on a crisp October morning. Moments like these are what drew me to photography, not the other way around.
Today, I travel throughout the United States seeking nothing more than time in nature and the chance to experience the outdoors in a real and personal way. For me, it is about the experience. The chance to encounter nature firsthand, to be present in fleeting moments, and to create photographs that grow out of that connection.
