Great Lakes Photo Collective is a place based photography education community built around thoughtful instruction, shared field experiences, and meaningful connections throughout the Great Lakes region.

WHY WE EXIST
Photography education should be about more than camera settings, dramatic locations, and collecting portfolio images.
It should teach us to slow down. To understand light before chasing it. To recognize what makes a place distinctive. And to create photographs that reflect both the landscape in front of us and the person standing behind the camera.
Great Lakes Photo Collective was created to make that kind of education more accessible here in the Great Lakes region through small-group experiences, honest instruction, and a community built around growth rather than competition.
The goal is not to teach people to reproduce someone else’s photographs. It is to help each photographer become more observant, capable, confident, and intentional in creating their own.
HOW WE LEARN
FIELD DAYS
Small-group photography experiences shaped by light, place, and individual attention. Field Days combine preparation, instruction, exploration, and constructive feedback… without turning the landscape into a tripod line.
ONLINE LEARNING
Practical, carefully structured education that connects what happens in the field with the decisions made before and after the shutter is pressed. Topics will include composition, light, planning, editing, visual storytelling, and creative development.
COLLABORATION
Collaborative workshops, conversations, and special events led alongside photographers and professionals with something meaningful to teach. Different voices, shared knowledge, and a commitment to education without ego.
OUR APPROACH

The Great Lakes are not simply backdrops. Every experience is shaped by the character, weather, ecology, and visual possibilities of the place itself.

Learning improves when an instructor understands what each person sees, where they are struggling, and what will help them take the next step. During guided Field Days, Nicholas is there to teach, not to build his own portfolio. His attention remains on helping participants refine their vision, make informed technical decisions, and create photographs that are distinctly their own.

The objective is not to guarantee a dramatic sky or send everyone home with the same composition. It is to develop skills that remain useful when the conditions, and the photographs, are entirely different.

Questions are welcome. Knowledge is shared openly. Photographers at different stages can learn beside one another without comparison, gatekeeping, or ego.
FOUNDED BY NICHOLAS ALBERT
Great Lakes Photo Collective was founded by Illinois landscape photographer and educator Nicholas Albert.
Nicholas’s work is rooted in the landscapes of the Great Lakes region and in a belief that meaningful photography begins with attention: attention to light, to place, to change, and to the experience of being present.
Through years spent photographing the region, producing The Lakescape Photography Podcast™, and sharing the creative process behind his work, he recognized a need for photography education that felt more personal, regional, and grounded. Education that was not built around formulas or spectacle, but around observation, craft, creative independence, and genuine human connection.
The Collective begins under Nicholas’s leadership, but it is intentionally designed to become larger than a single photographer. Over time, guest educators, local experts, conservation partners, and other creative professionals will bring their knowledge and perspectives into the experience.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN SERVICE OF PLACE
The landscapes that give us so much deserve something in return.
Great Lakes Photo Collective is built with a commitment to stewardship, generosity, and service. Each year, the Collective’s goal is to host a pay-what-you-can community photography event in partnership with a park or conservation organization, with event proceeds supporting the place that welcomes us.
It is an opportunity to learn together, photograph with purpose, welcome people who may not ordinarily attend a workshop, and give back to the landscapes that make this work possible.
For Nicholas, this commitment is rooted in faith and in the belief that our work should serve something beyond ourselves. Photography can become an act of attention, gratitude, and care, and a way of leaving a place better than we found it.
YOU BELONG HERE
The Collective is for photographers who want to understand, not merely imitate.
You may be learning to use your camera beyond automatic mode. You may already have years of experience but feel creatively stuck. You may photograph with sophisticated equipment or with the camera you already own.
What matters is curiosity, respect for the landscape, generosity toward others, and a willingness to keep learning.
There is no requirement to arrive with an impressive portfolio. Come ready to pay attention.
From quiet woodlands and sandstone canyons to open shorelines, changing weather, and the immense waters connecting the region, there is always more to notice.
