SPRING FIELD DAY

PHOTOGRAPHING TIME

Water is never truly still. It surges, falls, curls around stone, gathers in pools, and disappears downstream. The camera gives us a unique opportunity to decide how that passage of time will be expressed.

Water in Motion is a one-day field experience centered on learning to photograph waterfalls, cascades, and flowing streams with greater intention.

Rather than treating moving water simply as a subject, we’ll explore how movement itself can become part of the composition using shutter speed, rhythm, visual flow, light, and timing to create photographs that feel deliberate, expressive, and complete.

THE FOUR PILLARS

01 - READ THE FLOW

Learn to recognize direction, rhythm, repetition, and movement within the landscape and use water to guide the eye through the frame.

02 - SHAPE TIME

Explore how different shutter speeds change the character of moving water and learn to choose exposure based on expression rather than formula.

03 - BUILD THE SCENE

Organize complex woodland scenes using separation, visual weight, foregrounds, surrounding forms, and intentional simplification.

04 - WAIT FOR THE EVENT

Move beyond simply finding a composition and learn to recognize the moment when movement, light, atmosphere, and timing bring the photograph together.

MAKING THE MOST OF IT

A MORNING IN THE FIELD

We’ll meet at Matthiessen State Park at 7:00 AM and spend six hours working through the landscape together.

The day will begin slowly—walking, observing, and learning the location before committing to photographs. From there, we’ll work through composition, shutter speed, filter use, visual flow, exposure, and timing before gradually shifting toward individual exploration and one-on-one instruction.

This is not a photo tour built around rushing from one predetermined composition to another. We’ll spend time with scenes, explore variations, respond to changing conditions, and work toward photographs that feel considered rather than collected.

7:00 AM — Arrive & Observe
Learn the place before photographing it.

8:00 AM — Composition & Flow
Build structure from water, rock, woodland, and repetition.

9:30 AM — Movement & Exposure
Shutter speed, filters, highlights, and expressive choices.

11:00 AM — Subject & Event
Work with changing light, timing, atmosphere, and movement.

12:00 PM — Individual Exploration
Refine one or two compositions with personal instruction.

1:00 PM — Wrap Up & Optional Group Lunch

LASTING COMMITMENT

MORE THAN A DAY IN THE FIELD

The experience doesn't end when we leave the field.

Every participant will receive a downloadable Field Day guide covering the concepts explored throughout the day, along with practical references and exercises designed to reinforce what we learned.

A one-on-one virtual follow-up is also included, giving us time to review your photographs, discuss your editing decisions, answer questions, and continue building upon what you discovered in the field.

The goal isn't simply to help you make a photograph that morning. It's to develop a more deliberate way of seeing that you can carry into every landscape that follows.

$249.00

May 15, 2027 · 7:00 AM–1:00 PM · Limited to 6 photographers

Primary focus: movement, composition, shutter speed, visual flow, simplification, and timing.

Spring brings the landscape back to life, and few subjects express that energy better than moving water. This Field Day is built around learning how to photograph waterfalls, cascades, and flowing streams with greater intention using movement not simply as a subject, but as part of the composition itself.

Throughout the day, we’ll explore how shutter speed changes the character of water, how to organize complex woodland scenes, and how to use flow, repetition, foregrounds, and surrounding forms to create photographs that feel cohesive and deliberate. We’ll also work with polarizers and neutral density filters, manage highlights, and study how small changes in timing can completely change the visual rhythm of a scene.

More importantly, we’ll move beyond simply finding a waterfall and setting up a tripod. We’ll slow down, study the landscape, identify what is happening within the scene, and wait for the moment when subject, movement, light, and composition come together.
